Something, that really, I have always wondered about.
Is straightening one's hair a betrayal of femininism, or merely taking pride in yourself?
Although I'm strongly against making yourself up for school (It's an all girl's school; who are they trying to impress?), is there anything wrong with straightening or curling your hair at the weekend? Isn't it all right, or is it merely stating that you are discontent with your God-given looks and attributes?
Or, are all these things beyond our control? Are they part of a deeply ingrained urge to make ourselves attractive, and so find a partner for life? Other animals do it, why not us?

Taking an interest in, and experimenting with, your appearance is part of the process of self-exploration. Sometimes it is done with the intention of attracting attention (perhaps someone special, perhaps your peer group), and sometimes because that's how you feel on a particular day. Occasionally, it's because your laundry is backed up and you've run out of clothes that match.
The only person you betray by conforming is yourself, however, as it is be far better to be true to yourself than to show a false image to the world. Besides, the true you will emerge at some point anyway...
Well, it's neither, really. It depends on why you are straightening your hair - what reasons are you giving for it? THAT'S the real question.
If you want straight hair, it's no betrayal, it's no sell-out. Unless of course you want to do it for the reasons you give.
The act is usually much less important than the intent.
